Battles Forgotten, Afrique Du Nord the first in a series of three, follow two Texas brothers as they flee their outlandish family, poverty and abuse and join the military before World War II to maintain U.S. fighter planes. A Swedish chef, singing Haitian pilot and Free French Bedouin are their comrades. While the home-front is poignant and humor is at heart of this book, it is also a commentary on poverty, faith, war, race and survival.

"Battles Forgotten is a taut, dramatic, historical novel, that as the name implies, sheds light on an important period of human conflict. Despite the serious nature of the subject matter, Mr. Vardaman injects his unique witticism to amplify the characters. He draws on his Scottish roots to depict not only the local language, but the morals and integrity of the era.
While the brogue can be challenging, the authenticity is indispensable. The protagonists, although inimitable in their own right, are woven together in such an engaging manner that the reader wants to keep turning the page. Mr. Vardaman recognizes that the brave sacrifices of young men and women in places other than the Hollywood, iconic pages of history books, should never be forgotten. And so should we." ~ Robert Glickley, Retired Executive "Battles Forgotten is a unique historical novel about life in the United States during the Great Depression and World War II. The author takes the reader on an engaging journey into the social, financial, moral and military lives of an extended family of that era. It also provides a thought-provoking commentary on the issues of poverty, race, religion and freedom that provided the exceptional foundation for the “Greatest Generation.” This book bolstered my understanding of my own early grade-school years. I recommend this book as an enjoyable read for all ages to appreciate how 100 years of our history can help us today." ~ RW Harsh, 1st Lt. US Army, retired Engineer |
